Asia Pacific Leadership Program(APLP)
The East-West Center is an education and research organization established by the U.S. Congress in 1960 to strengthen relations and understanding among the peoples and nations of Asia, the Pacific and the United States. The Center contributes to a peaceful, prosperous and just Asia Pacific community by serving as a vigorous hub for cooperative research, education and dialogue on critical issues of common concern to the Asia Pacific region and the United States. Funding for the Center comes from the U.S. government, with additional support provided by private agencies, individuals, foundations, corporations and the governments of the region.
Over its 50 years of serving as a U.S.-based institution for public diplomacy in the Asia Pacific region with international governance, staffing, students and participants, the Center has built a worldwide network of more than 55,000 alumni and 600 partner organizations.
The Asia Pacific Leadership Program (APLP) is a signature program of the East-West Center (EWC).
The APLP links advanced and interdisciplinary analysis of emergent regional issues with experiential leadership learning. The APLP empowers future leaders with the knowledge, skills, experiences and supportive community needed to achieve personal and regional change in the 21st Century.
This year’s APLP cohort is the tenth class. It comprises 34 participants from 16 countries and a tremendous range of backgrounds (e.g., business, development, art, journalism, medicine, finance and so on). The class has completed five months of work at the East-West Center campus and is now putting learning into action in a variety of ways. Each year a small group of the APLP class is selected to travel to Asia as ‘delegates’ of the East-West Center and the APLP. This honor is called GIST.
